Bigmouth Arthrothere

The Bigmouth Arthrothere replaced its ancestor. It has developed a face like that of a Terran potoo, excellent for grabbing small prey. It is smaller than its ancestor to make it less conspicuous to predators, and it has developed a more efficient sprawling posture so that it does not expend as much energy supporting its weight while staying still. In addition to small creatures, it also readily consumes various flora in its environment, such as caltrops, purple flora, kramboo, and the various moss-like crystals. It has lost its vestigial leg fin.

The Bigmouth Arthrothere’s most distinct feature, aside from its silly face, is its antennae. No longer used for grabbing prey, they have instead turned into ridiculous display structures and sensory organs. The frond-like shape allows them to be used for scenting thanks to their great surface area, and their ludicrous size basically makes them sexy. Big antennae indicate good health, so Bigmouth Arthrotheres usually pick mates with such. The markings around its eyes continue to play a role in sexual selection, but they are not as good an indicator as silly antennae.

Like other descendants of its ancestor, the Bigmouth Arthrothere re-thickened its exoskeleton so that it would not shatter and cripple it with its own muscles from vigorous activity. It is ovoviviparous and does not raise its young.
