Eyestar
Replacing the Northern Polarstar in their overlapping temperate locations, the eyestar is very similar to its ancestor except for features to adapt to newly-encountered predators. It has a grand total of 48 simple eyes all along its arms, which allow it to detect a potential predator's motion and avoid it; and some amount of countershading, which makes it more difficult to spot. These features also allow it to also compete with its ancestor’s ancestor, leslilstar.
The eyestar generally swims in a more upright posture than its ancestor to make its countershading more effective, but it will turn for more effective swimming when escaping a predator. It is otherwise much like its ancestor; chemoreceptive patches help it steer towards potential food to filter from the surrounding water, it digests its food inside its cells, and it disposes of waste through a primitive anus.
