The Ambrecandela has acquired a new ability through a chance event. In the ingestion of a Bioluminafasma cell, it was able to gain its luciferin genes and begin producing its own light. The light it produces is a dim glow, but it is enough to be noticeable by light sensitive organisms at night. Some Ambrecandela have been observed brightening and dimming the light in response to water turbulence, a possible adaptation to glow brighter when prey is near. Photosynthesis provides its main source of energy, and is supplemented by filter feeding with its tentacles. The light produced in the tentacles assists in attracting organisms to them to be eaten.

Reproduction has developed into two different methods based on the environment. When conditions are favorable, gametes are released and undergo fusion to then become new adults. In unfavorable conditions, adults produce juveniles. These juveniles will remain pelagic until conditions improve and they can become rooted and undergo sexual fusion.
