Split off from a terrestrial line of Crystalkillers, the Wormrot occurred as a consequence of binucleid worms being very closely related to crystal flora and made of many of the same materials. Its chitinase is just as effective against the exoskeleton of a binucleid worm as it was against the shells of crystal flora. It can erode holes as large as 3 cm in the exoskeletons of the worms it infects, allowing it access to the inside where it effectively decomposes the host to death. It makes numerous copies of itself to break down all the flesh, and it goes on to spread to other binucleid worms which either try to feed on the carcass or pass by where the disease spreads by air or touch. It isn't bad enough to drive any species to extinction, however.
