Drake Mosshroom
One of several new Mosshrooms to colonize the shallows, the Drake Mosshroom split off from its ancestor and colonized Drake’s polar coastline. Like a terran mushroom, it can sometimes be found seemingly on its own long after an organism rotted away, feeding on the remnants long after they've vanished from plain sight. To adapt for the harsh cold, it developed the ability to store excess gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide obtained from the surrounding water in its shell tissue to reduce heat loss, a bit like a thermos, making it hardier and more resistant to ice while also giving it a duller, cloudy appearance. It is otherwise like its ancestor; it grows in large groups encrusting dead organisms, lives a short life but produces clouds of glittery spores, and appears to have a “fiery” core when held to light.
