The spiny charnlit split from its ancestor when a population of charnlit moved into LadyM ocean. There, they were subject to some predation, and the surviving population developed calcium carbonate spikes on the ends of their isomers. The only isomer to not have a spike is the final isomer, which bud off. When the next isomer takes the budding isomer’s place, it will lose its spike. Because of this shedding behavior, two piles of shed spikes often accumulate on opposite ends of the organism.
