Pillblobs

As Driftrings started diversifying, one lineage stayed to their roots, keeping their general lifestyle whilst manipulating their form. Clusters now consist of 18 individuals, which are all fused at the top. This prevents them from being torn apart from any strong currents. Individuals now have the ability to have more than one pseudopod extended at once, which increases their success rate when reaching for food. Their organelles have also changed: their nuclei come closer to being a single one. An organelle located near the bumps is now used for better respiration. Lastly, an organelle that formed in their ancestor is now used for passing nutrients from cell to cell. When two individuals of the same species meet, one will attempt to wrap its pseudopods around them, pulling them in before fusing their cells. The 15 species composing this genus are very widespread, and split into three different groups. The Twilight Pillblob, the smallest and darkest of the three groups (as its name suggests) live in the twilight zone. Sun/Twilight Pillblobs, the middle of the three groups, as its name suggests, lives in both sunlight and twilight zones. Sunlight Pillblobs, the largest and brightest of the three groups, as its name suggests, live in the sunlight zone.

A diagram showing a cross section of a complete cluster. Light blue - Cytoplasm. Green blue - cell membrane. Purple - an organelle used for passing nutrients. Black - nucleus. Orange - an organelle used to take oxygen into the rest of its cell. Yellow - an organelle used for storing nutrients. Red - protein used for baits.
