Globanitros split off from their ancestor and became global nitrogen fixers. Some have shed their previous detritivorous habits, relying entirely on photosynthesis and atmospheric ammonia for energy, allowing them to conquer even the most empty and barren lands. Terrestrial species have thickened cell membranes to prevent themselves from drying out, and many in dryer climates make use of water vacuoles for extra water storage. Some species live in large colonial mats, while others prefer to be alone or buried in sediment.
