Vents are cracks in the mid-ocean ridges that jut deep into the abyss, with some of the ocean's highest pressures. There is no supply of energy through sunlight, but there is plenty of energy available from the volcanic vents themselves. The volcanic activity makes this area extremely hot, unlike the surrounding ocean. Abyssal gigantism applies here. Vents are adjacent only to any neighboring vents and to the ridge that contains them.
