This represents subduction trenches, where one tectonic plate is sliding beneath another. These are the lowest parts of the ocean, with the highest pressures. There is much available hydrothermal energy and no sunlight. Much of it is extremely hot due to volcanic activity, but it is cooler away from these vents. Abyssal gigantism applies.
