This represents a tectonically active region where seafloor spreading is underway. The ridge itself is raised above the ocean floor, so while it is not shallow, it is less deep than the surrounding ocean. It has an abundant supply of hydrothermal energy but is quite unstable. Most ridges are in the Midnight Zone in depth, but the Rhino Ridge is equivalent to Twilight Slope, meaning that photosynthesis is possible on Rhino Ridge but not on any other ridges. Ridges are adjacent to the Midnight Zone, the Abyssal Zone, and Abyssal Floor, any neighboring ridges or cold seeps, and to the vents within them.
