These are areas where the sea floor emits hydrocarbons, forming a pool of brine. While warmer than the surrounding abyss, they are much colder than hydrothermal vents. Sunlight is unavailable, but there is a rich variety of chemicals available for chemosynthesis. These communities are much more stable than vents. Abyssal gigantism applies.
